Perth to Jurien Bay: The Road Trip

DRIVING FROM PERTH TO JURIEN BAY

Jurien Bay is approximately 220 kilometres north of Perth. The direct drive takes around two and a half hours along Indian Ocean Drive. The main route is sealed and suitable for standard two-wheel-drive vehicles.

Allow more time if you plan to stop along the way. Yanchep, Moore River, Lancelin, the Pinnacles and Cervantes can all be included in the journey. Choose two or three stops for a comfortable day on the road.

Indian Ocean Drive passes coastal heath, farmland, sand dunes and several small seaside towns before reaching Jurien Bay. Winter and spring bring displays of native wildflowers along parts of the route.

Travel north from Perth and follow the signs towards Yanchep and Indian Ocean Drive. Check your navigation before leaving, as the best route through Perth’s northern suburbs can change with traffic and roadworks.

Yanchep National Park makes a convenient first stop. Visitors can walk along the koala boardwalk, look for kangaroos, enjoy the picnic areas or book a guided cave tour. Park entry fees apply, and cave tours should be booked in advance.

Guilderton is another possible detour. This small coastal town sits where the Moore River meets the Indian Ocean. Stop for a walk beside the estuary, stretch your legs or enjoy the view from the river mouth.

Lancelin is approximately one and a half hours from Perth. The town is known for its beaches and enormous white sand dunes. Visitors can walk to the top of the dunes, hire a sandboard or stop in town for food and fuel. Do not take a standard two-wheel-drive vehicle onto the dunes or surrounding sand tracks.

Continue north from Lancelin along Indian Ocean Drive. This section passes open farmland, coastal vegetation and long stretches of white sand dunes. Allow additional travel time during the wildflower season if you plan to stop for photographs.

The Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park is the major attraction along this part of the journey. Thousands of limestone formations rise from the yellow sand, creating one of Western Australia’s most recognisable landscapes.

The road into the Pinnacles is sealed, and visitors can explore using the 4.5-kilometre driving trail or the walking trail through the desert. The Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre provides information about the geology, plants and cultural history of the area. National park entry fees apply.

Continue to Cervantes for food, fuel or another short stop. Lake Thetis is located near the town and has a viewing boardwalk where visitors can see ancient stromatolites. Hangover Bay is another nearby option for a beach stop when conditions are suitable.

Cervantes to Jurien Bay

The final drive from Cervantes to Jurien Bay takes approximately 30 minutes. Continue north along Indian Ocean Drive and follow the signs into Jurien Bay.

Head to the foreshore and Jurien Bay Jetty for your first look at the coastline. The town centre, cafés, accommodation and beach are all located nearby. Visitors joining a marine tour should continue towards Jurien Bay Boat Harbour on Breakwater Drive.

All Jurien Bay Oceanic Experience tours depart from Depot 3, 1225 Breakwater Drive. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure to allow enough time for check-in and boarding.

If you are staying overnight, use your arrival afternoon to explore the foreshore, settle into your accommodation and check the weather for the following day.

Fill your fuel tank before leaving Perth and carry drinking water in the vehicle. Fuel, food and basic supplies are available in the main towns along the route, including Lancelin, Cervantes and Jurien Bay. Opening hours may be limited outside busy travel periods.

Drive during daylight hours where possible. Kangaroos and other animals are more active around dawn and dusk. Reduce your speed when animals are near the road and leave plenty of room when travelling behind trucks or caravans.

Check the Main Roads WA Travel Map before departure for roadworks, incidents and current driving conditions. Visitors planning to enter a national park should also check DBCA Park Alerts for closures or access changes.

Book your Jurien Bay tours before beginning the road trip, especially during weekends and school holidays. Avoid scheduling a tour too close to your expected arrival time. Traffic, rest stops and unplanned detours can extend the journey.

A day trip from Perth is possible with an early departure. The return drive takes approximately five hours without stops, so an overnight stay provides a more comfortable schedule for a marine tour and time around town.

Public fast-charging stations are available in Lancelin and Jurien Bay. Begin the drive with a full battery and plan your charging stops according to your vehicle’s range.

The Lancelin charging station is located on Rock Way beside Wangaree Park. It provides a convenient place to recharge while stopping for food, visiting the beach or exploring the Lancelin Sand Dunes.

Jurien Bay has a WA EV Network charging station at the Murray Street road reserve near the Indian Ocean Drive shopping complex. The site includes a 150kW DC fast charger and a backup 7.6kW AC charger.

Charging speeds depend on your vehicle, battery level and charger availability. Check Chargefox or PlugShare before leaving Perth and again during the drive for current availability, compatibility and pricing. Some accommodation providers also offer destination charging, which should be confirmed directly before your stay.
